Soft and Warm Fleece Sheets
Who would have guessed that there is more than are more than one kind of fleece sheets? There is micro fleece, polar fleece and plush fleece. And all of these are used to make fleece sheets, blankets, clothing and more.
Traditional fleece is actually the unique interlocking hair fibers on certain sheep and alpacas that are sheared, processed and spun into wool yarn and then into woolen fabrics. Due to the itchy quality of wool, and the often high price of woolen goods, a synthetic fleece fabric was developed in the nineteen-seventies as an softer, itch-free, less expensive alternative to traditional wool. Made from recycled plastic bags and bottles it is an eco-friendly synthetic material as well as being safe for those with an allergy to wool, or extremely sensitive skin that would otherwise be unable to have skin contact with wool products made from animal fleece.

Originally used for outerwear because of the water-repellent and heat-preserving qualities of this dense fiber, it is now used to manufacture anything that can be made from traditional wool.
Different names are used to describe synthetic fleece but in reality there are only 2 types. Micro fleece sheets and polar fleece sheets are names used for the same product. They are simply a fleece that is densely woven to create a fabric that is not only water-repellent, but will wick away moisture and continue to provide warmth even when wet. This product is available in varying thickness with micro being thinnest and most supple, with the next being 100, 200 and 300 which is thickest with less flexibility. Plush fleece is the name given to the soft, thick and luxurious fleece that is often used for thick robes and stuffed toys. Plush fleece makes a great alternative to flannel sheets as it is thick and cushioned as well as soft and warm.
Using synthetic fleece sheets is a good idea, not just for those with an allergy or sensitivity to real wool fleece, but for everyone as it holds in body heat but, like cotton, is a breathable fabric allowing moisture to dry quickly while keeping your skin feeling warm and dry. Perfect for cold winter nights to chill at bay fleece sheets are available in a wide choice of colors and prints perfect for the master bedroom to the nursery and every age in between.

Jersey Sheets
Jersey sheets are the cornerstone of bed in a bag bedding ensembles aimed at teenagers but they are comfortable for everyone and have risen in popularity over the last few years for many reasons.
Likened to a broken-in tee-shirt, jersey knit sheets are generally made from 100% pre-shrunk cotton, or in many cases, Egyptian cotton. Because jersey sheets already have that lived-in feel to them straight out of the package, there’s no need to give them a wash before use to get a soft broken-in feeling. Similar in texture to a flannel sheet, jersey sheets are perfect for those who feel that cotton sheets are a little too cool. Jersey bed sheets will give you a good night’s sleep without the added sometimes unwelcome warmth of flannel sheets.
The comfort and coolness of jersey are perfect attributes in any weather but even more so in the heat of summer. Better jersey sheet sets have elastic all around the edges of the sheet rather than just at the corners, providing a snug fit to the mattress. These types of sheets tend to wash and dry with a minimum amount of wrinkles, making them iron-free as well. However, jersey sheets need some care due to the make up of the fabric so be sure that these types of sheets are for you before you buy.
In addition to the positives, jersey cotton sheets have their drawbacks as well. Most manufacturers recommend caring for jersey knit sheets by washing them in cool or cold water. This is supposed to avoid problems like shrinkage, pilling or stretching. While this process does avoid shrinking the fabric, washing sheets in warm or hot water is far more hygienic and if you have an allergy to dust mites, you really need to use hot water as they won’t die off in cooler temperatures.
Beware of buying cheap jersey sheet sets as there have been quality issues in some cases. No matter how much you pay, examine your sheets before use. If the dye on the pillow cases is different in shading than the dye on the sheets, or if the sheets themselves vary from each other, return them to the store from which they came. This means that the set you’ve purchased is from a mixed of lot, which may mean that you will end up with a mismatched set if one item in the set fades or wears more than another. They all need to be part of the same dye lot.
While not as glamorous as silk or satin sheets, a jersey sheet set is built for comfort and a good night’s sleep. While other types of sheet sets can be found with high thread counts, jersey sheets are generally lower in count, hovering around the 200- and 300-count range. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however, it just basically means that jersey sheets don’t have the same luster and finish as something like percale sheets. That is not a problem as a higher thread count in jersey sheet sets would actually eliminate the appeal of the fabric.
Sold either as separates or the ever-popular bed-in-a-bag bedding ensembles, jersey sheets are available in any store that sells bedding, such as a linen shop, department store or discount department store, and on the Internet too. And, they’re available in every size you might need, including, twin, full, queen and king. In fact, jersey knit sheets are also popular for a child’s crib due to the beautiful softness of the fabric so if you have a baby on the way look out for jersey crib bedding. These sheets are also found in a variety of colors to match any décor, with colors ranging from red, green, blue, pink, purple, and yellow, and just about every other color choice in between. Patterns for jersey sheets are rare, however, as these types of bed sheets normally only come in solids.
Jersey sheets are a cozy alternative to other, more conventional types of sheets. They feel smooth and soft against your skin, and maintain their shape for years. A long-wearing, comfortable choice, jersey sheets are great for snuggling up in all types of weather.

Satin Sheets
For some people, there’s nothing like the cool, seductive feel of satin sheets on a bed. The soft, slippery, cool feel of satin is unlike any other fabric. Cotton, flannel, percale and other similar materials, just don’t have the same appeal of a fine satin sheet. What it lacks in durability and functionality, satin more than makes up for in its allure. Satin sheets send a message that’s very hard to misinterpret: they’re all about appearance.
Good quality satin sheet sets can be quite pricey, depending upon the size needed and where you buy them. Each set normally includes a fitted bottom sheet, top sheet and two pillowcases, although you can get more extensive bedding ensembles, which also include a bed cover. Conversely, because of the high price of satin, many stores sell each item separately. And, the old adage “you get what you pay for” really does apply in this case. The higher the price per satin sheet set, the better the quality. Higher prices generally means that the fabric is top-quality silk, polyester or nylon and the stitching is finer and more durable. Bargains can be had usually only when a manufacturer is having a closeout sale on a particular color or pattern although you will find better prices online than in stores as a rule. For a great selection of satin sheets at reasonable prices, click here or check out the selection below.
One of the key factors to consider when purchasing satin bed sheets is whether the fabric is woven. Lower quality satin sheets are most likely made from sub-par knitted materials rather than having a woven surface – the smoothness and shininess of satin comes from the type of thread and the way the fabric is woven so this is very important. The tighter the weave, the smoother the surface, which dictates the thread count.
Man-made fibers like polyester, nylon, and acetate are very fine, which makes them perfect for the high-thread count fabrics used in satin sheet sets. Natural materials, like cotton, can be made to have a “sateen” finish similar to satin but they don’t have the amount of shine or smoothness that the man-made fibers provide.
Satin sheets are available in every size, including twin, full, queen, and both California and standard king. If you have a pillow-top bed, be sure to look for deep pocket fitted sheets, as good woven satin doesn’t stretch much. While satin sheets are occasionally available in department stores, generally speaking it’s better to purchase them either online in a specialty store or in a store that primarily sells satin sheets. Keep in mind, however, that many reputable satin sheet stores don’t stock pre-made sheets. They keep bolts of fabric and custom-make sets, meaning that it may take one to four weeks per order.
One of the drawbacks to satin sheet sheets is that they necessitate more care than cotton or percale, and are far more delicate. For example, satin sheets made of silk or nylon should be guarded against the sun, so if the room in which they’re being used is bright and sunny, it’s better to choose polyester or acetate. Washing and drying satin sheets depends solely on the material used. Dry cleaning or hand washing is best for acetate but they should never be put in a dryer or they will start to fall apart. Polyester, silk and nylon are all fairly durable and can be washed in a machine but it’s generally better to line-dry them as well. However, silk, like acetate, is sensitive to the sun.
For those who like the appeal of satin but don’t have the time or patience to deal with the cleaning methods, satin comforters are an excellent compromise. While they do require dry cleaning, you typically don’t have to send them out as often as you would a set of sheets. And, paired with 300 count cotton sateen sheets, you’ll have the illusion of an elegant boudoir.
Typically available in bright, bold colors, satin sheets come in a wide variety of palettes ranging from , crimson red, sapphire blue, emerald green, chocolate brown, midnight black, and oyster. Often, people choose shades like oyster because they’re very neutral and go with any décor. For the brave, bright red satin sheets and deep black satin sheets are always popular choices, never mind whether they match their surrounding or simply their owner’s personality. No matter what color you choose, you’ll be guaranteed that your bedding will be more glamorous than if you chose any other fabric.

Percale Sheets
If you want bed sheets that are comfortable against your skin, long lasting and smooth then you are making a great choice with percale sheets. Percale is particularly durable and unlike other sheets, those made from this material will not start to pill after a few washes. Percale bedding is easy to iron smooth and it stays smooth and unwrinkled on the bed. That’s why it is the type of bed sheet favored by hotels and the hospitality industry in general as well as those homeowners who know about quality bedding.
What is Percale?
In case you don’t know, percale is not a fabric itself but a particular weave which can be used with different types of fabric. It is where the threads are woven very tightly and each individual thread in one direction crosses over an individual thread in the other, giving bedding made in this way a remarkably smooth appearance and feel. This means you can have percale cotton sheets or polycotton sheets or a cotton and linen blend and percale with other materials such as silk (although this is rare).
Don’t Confuse Percale with High Thread Count
Usually percale sheets have a high thread count of 200 or more but you may find higher thread counts, where the weave is not so tight nor the sheets so smooth. That is because the thread count is the count of the total threads in each direction per square inch. You may find with some high thread count sheets that in one or other direction three threads will be twisted together and woven with one or more in the other direction. The fabric will be heavier than that used in a percale sheet but the fabric will feel rough to the touch in comparison. If you want luxury bedding, look for high end percale sheets not just high thread counts.
You Won’t Always Find Percale on the Packaging
Because manufacturers know that buyers are looking for high thread counts as a sign of quality sheets, you are likely to find percale sheet sets where the thread count is emphasized but not the weave. You may even have to look for “cotton woven with single-ply yarns” in the description as is the case with these good value percale bed sheets on the left.
Egyptian Cotton Percale Sheets
Is it worth paying more for percale cotton sheets from Egypt? The jury is out on this. The cotton growing region in Egypt is quite small and of course all the cotton has to be imported so this makes it expensive. The main thing about Egyptian cotton is that it uses cotton with long fibers (known as staples) giving a smoother finer finish. The truth is that you can get the same long fibers from cotton grown in the US – Supima and Pima cotton has the same good qualities and is usually cheaper.
Fitted or Flat?
If you want a smooth finish to your bed, it is important that the bottom sheet fits well. My answer to that is to buy an over large percale flat sheet for the bed and then use hospital corners well tucked in to give a smooth bottom sheet which does not move. I hate struggling with those elasticated corners. I really do. And I love the way I can have a neat stack of beautifully smooth percale flat sheets in the linen cabinet. If you’d rather buy percale fitted sheets, make sure that they are large enough to fit your mattress in all dimensions including the depth – buy extra deep fitted sheets (usually called deep pocker percale sheets) if necessary. (You will definitely need these if you have a mattress larger than 10 inches deep) and also that they are made of a fabric that will not shrink, and affect the sizing.
Sometimes you have to put up with percale fitted bottom sheets because most sheet sets, no matter what fabric they are made from come with a flat and a fitted sheet. If I was very tempted by a percale sheet set like that I would end up buying two and giving away an expensive but unloved percale fitted sheet to a friend. But that is probably just me!
Colors and Styles
Most quality sheets, percale or not, are made in pale solid colors such as white, cream, oyster or pale blue. You can actually find sheets in every color of the rainbow and in many designs but with most of the brightly colored sheets you find for both kids and adults, the quality is not the best and percale is not so easy to find – most cheap kids bedding is around the 40 thread count mark. The sheets with percale weave on the left are some of the few you can get in great colors so they are well worth a look. If you have the budget for high end designer bedding ensembles, you will often find percale sheets included, but if that kind of expense is not in your budget you are better to buy solid colored sheets made from percale to have next to your skin and then buy a more colorful quilt or bedspread to add life to your room. Comfort is everything when you spend a third of your life in bed.
Are Percale Sheets Expensive?
Of course, percale cost a little more than poor quality sheets but it is well worth it for the difference in cost. In any case, you can usually find discount percale sheets on sale so there is no need to miss out. If you are looking to buy percale sheets you will find a good selection HERE on Amazon often with great discounts and free shipping.
