A daybed is a great way of saving space. It is a means of providing an extra living room during the day which converts to a bedroom at night or when guests arrive. Daybeds are designed to look like a couch when not in use as a bed and be a comfortable bed when not in use as a couch! For that magic to happen, you need to get new bedding from the range of daybed bedding ensembles available.

You see, you really can’t make do with standard bedding for a daybed if you want it to look good whether it is being used as a couch or a bed. Bedding for daybeds has a dual function. For example pillows will work as bed pillows at night and as throw cushions on the couch during the day. The daybed cover works as a sofa cover during the day, and as a bed cover at night.

I love the ingenuity of this. Not only do you have to buy only one lot of daybed bedding and save money that way but you also don’t have to find any place to store your daybed linens during the day. That has to be good!

The sale of designer bedding is strictly controlled so that the designs are not devalued. You are paying for exclusivity after all. You don’t want to pay for an expensive bedding ensemble only to find your bedding on every bed from one end of the state to the other.

Now however you might very well find luxury items online (although quantities and outlets will still be limited) and that is the best place to start your search. You can find what you are looking for without having to go from shop to shop (or even travel to a different city).

You can see standard prices online and if you can’t get a discount, you can wait for the items to go on sale at the end of the season. Luxury bedding ranges normally change twice a year in line with sale time – although you will often find mid-season sales these days.

There is a danger with this strategy in that you might find that your chosen design has sold out by sale time (as so few of each design are made) but if you want to pay less than the full price then you may have to wait and hope that the bedding you have your eye on is not sold out.

If you don’t have your heart set on a particular range of luxury bedding you will find things a little easier. You can often pick up beautiful luxury bedding sets in the factory and designer outlet malls so it can help if you are flexible. The discount bedding ensembles offered there are likely to be less popular designs from the previous season but all the designs will be stunning in any case and will offer you the luxurious touch you won’t find from standard run of the mill bedding.

Actually my favorite way of saving money on luxury bedding is to pick up ideas from the top of the range bedding ensembles – especially those displayed in the top department store in my area and in online stores. Sometimes you can save money by buying top quality non-designer sheets which tone in with your bedding and by choosing the pieces which are on show or make the set distinctive from a luxury bedding ensemble range. (Most designer bedding ensembles are sold as individual items. That may be so that you are lulled into a sense of false security about the price and don’t get a chance to add it all up until you are at the desk to pay for it!) You can decide for yourself which parts of the ensemble give you the most impressive bedding for your money. It actually depends on the range. In one ensemble the bed skirt will be something magnificent you don’t want to give up. In another you will know where to get some beautiful pillows that will replace the expensive bedding and add a unique touch to the bed ensemble without adding hugely to the price. Sheets can nearly always be obtained at lower prices however. In this way an expensive bedding ensemble can be put together more cheaply than if you bought the designer sheets along with the bed runner and everything else in between. You may even have money left over for some luxury down pillows which make such a difference to the comfort of your bed.

If you’re not sure where to start, luxury bedding ensembles to look out for include the European ranges such as Yves Delorme and Descamps as well as designers in the US such as Ralph Lauren.

King Bedding Ensemble

You might think your options when choosing a king bedding ensemble might be a bit more limited than for other sizes of bedding however more and more of us are buying king size beds today so there is plenty to select from when it comes to king sized bedding. You can basically purchase any color under the rainbow and any style: contemporary, floral, classic, masculine – you name it, you will find it, although you won’t find many (or even any) kids’ style cartoon characters at this size of bed linen.

If you are not sure whether you have a king sized bed then you will need to measure your bed. It does not matter if the bedding is for a size larger than your bed however unless your bedding set includes any fitted elements such as fitted sheets or a fitted top cover. I know I like to use a standard king size duvet cover and duvet on a smaller bed to allow more overlap at the edges (and fewer arguments when the covers get pulled this way and that LOL)

As a rule a king size bed measures 78″ wide whereas a queen bed is just 60″ wide. Both are 80″ long.

If you would like a strategy for buying I would say first of all look at the comprehensive all in one range bedding sets around. You will find them in local department stores and soft furnishing stores.  Plus you will find lots of choices online. If you can find a bedding ensemble which suits your requirements and taste perfectly then you need look no further. You can stop there.

If, on the other hand you can’t find exactly what you are looking for then buy a bedding ensemble in a plain color (like the beautiful white bedding ensemble below)  which can be enhanced with other accessories. You can add cushions, a throw or two and curtains which fit well with your bedding to build up your room scheme.

The first strategy is easier (though it relies on you finding something you like) but you can have a lot of fun and exercise your creative muscles more with the second strategy.  If you would like to build up your own ensemble, a lot depends on how much time and inclination you have to shop although by shopping online for your bedding and other items  it is not so tiring or difficult to track down what you need as it is if you shop locally.

Whichever shopping strategy you choose for your bedding ensemble make sure you buy a quality bedding set. It’s all very well looking for cheap bedding ensembles but a low price can mean your bedding may fade and wear out quickly. If your bed starts looking more tired than you after a long day,  you will regret going too cheap – and you will be shopping again all too soon.

Buying Bedding Ensembles: Don’t Forget to Measure Your Bed!

There are a few measurements you should take before you go off to the bedding superstore to look at bedding ensembles or decide to order online. Be sure to measure your bed especially the width and length of the mattress unless you have a standard size single (twin), double, queen or king bed.

Even if you do think you have a standard size, it does no harm to check!

The standard sizes are as follows

Twin 39″ x 75″
Double 54″ x 75″
Queen 60″ x 80″
King 78″ x 80″

There’s even a standard size California King (72″ x 84″) if you have a very large bed.

In any case whether you have a standard sized bed or not, you need to measure your bed when choosing a bedding ensemble with fitted sheets. Measure the depth of the mattress from the top edge to the base and include any additional bedding which will be included under your sheets such as mattress topper, electric blanket, mattress cover etc.

This measurement needs to match the pocket depth of the sheet as closely as possible to ensure correct fitting of the elasticated anchor bands at the corners. If the sheets don’t fit your mattress properly they will rumple and give you a disturbed night’s rest.

It’s better to use a flat sheet with enough extra width and depth to be properly tucked in under the mattress than a fitted sheet where you struggle to fit it over the corners at bed making time or which is too big and won’t stay in place on the mattress.

While ensembles with a comforter included will come in standard sizes, for a bedding set with a duvet cover, measure the length and width of the duvet itself rather than the size of the bed as duvet covers are made to fit particular sizes of duvet.

For a bed skirt measure around the base and the height of the bed from the bottom of the mattress (top of the base) to the floor.

Some sheets have an attached bed skirt and then you need both measurements – the depth of the mattress and the distance from the mattress base to the floor.

With all these variables you’d think it would be difficult to finding bedding ensembles to suit your bed but most bedding sets are in standard sizes so if you have a fairly typical bed you should have plenty of ensembles to choose from – both budget and luxury. It’s just a case of checking that you have measurements which conform so that you can look at the right size.

In some ways, it makes sense to always choose a standard bed so that you have that choice – an easy accessible range of bedding ensembles in the stores and online.

On the other hand if you have your heart set on (or already have) an unusual bed it can itself form the center of your bedroom design and you could settle for plainer bed linen allowing the bed to speak for itself.
