Traditional fleece is actually the unique interlocking hair fibers on certain sheep and alpacas that are sheared, processed and spun into wool yarn and then into woolen fabrics. Due to the itchy quality of wool, and the often high price of woolen goods, a synthetic fleece fabric was developed in the nineteen-seventies as an softer, itch-free, less expensive alternative to traditional wool. Made from recycled plastic bags and bottles it is an eco-friendly synthetic material as well as being safe for those with an allergy to wool, or extremely sensitive skin that would otherwise be unable to have skin contact with wool products made from animal fleece.

Originally used for outerwear because of the water-repellent and heat-preserving qualities of this dense fiber, it is now used to manufacture anything that can be made from traditional wool.
Different names are used to describe synthetic fleece but in reality there are only 2 types. Micro fleece sheets and polar fleece sheets are names used for the same product. They are simply a fleece that is densely woven to create a fabric that is not only water-repellent, but will wick away moisture and continue to provide warmth even when wet. This product is available in varying thickness with micro being thinnest and most supple, with the next being 100, 200 and 300 which is thickest with less flexibility. Plush fleece is the name given to the soft, thick and luxurious fleece that is often used for thick robes and stuffed toys. Plush fleece makes a great alternative to flannel sheets as it is thick and cushioned as well as soft and warm.
