For some people, there’s nothing like the cool, seductive feel of satin sheets on a bed. The soft, slippery, cool feel of satin is unlike any other fabric. Cotton, flannel, percale and other similar materials, just don’t have the same appeal of a fine satin sheet. What it lacks in durability and functionality, satin more than makes up for in its allure. Satin sheets send a message that’s very hard to misinterpret: they’re all about appearance.
Good quality satin sheet sets can be quite pricey, depending upon the size needed and where you buy them. Each set normally includes a fitted bottom sheet, top sheet and two pillowcases, although you can get more extensive bedding ensembles, which also include a bed cover. Conversely, because of the high price of satin, many stores sell each item separately. And, the old adage “you get what you pay for” really does apply in this case. The higher the price per satin sheet set, the better the quality. Higher prices generally means that the fabric is top-quality silk, polyester or nylon and the stitching is finer and more durable. Bargains can be had usually only when a manufacturer is having a closeout sale on a particular color or pattern although you will find better prices online than in stores as a rule. One of the key factors to consider when purchasing satin bed sheets is whether the fabric is woven. Lower quality satin sheets are most likely made from sub-par knitted materials rather than having a woven surface – the smoothness and shininess of satin comes from the type of thread and the way the fabric is woven so this is very important. The tighter the weave, the smoother the surface, which dictates the thread count.

Man-made fibers like polyester, nylon, and acetate are very fine, which makes them perfect for the high-thread count fabrics used in satin sheet sets. Natural materials, like cotton, can be made to have a “sateen” finish similar to satin but they don’t have the amount of shine or smoothness that the man-made fibers provide.
Satin sheets are available in every size, including twin, full, queen, and both California and standard king. If you have a pillow-top bed, be sure to look for deep pocket fitted sheets, as good woven satin doesn’t stretch much. While satin sheets are occasionally available in department stores, generally speaking it’s better to purchase them either online in a specialty store or in a store that primarily sells satin sheets. Keep in mind, however, that many reputable satin sheet stores don’t stock pre-made sheets. They keep bolts of fabric and custom-make sets, meaning that it may take one to four weeks per order.
One of the drawbacks to satin sheet sheets is that they necessitate more care than cotton or percale, and are far more delicate. For example, satin sheets made of silk or nylon should be guarded against the sun, so if the room in which they’re being used is bright and sunny, it’s better to choose polyester or acetate. Washing and drying satin sheets depends solely on the material used. Dry cleaning or hand washing is best for acetate but they should never be put in a dryer or they will start to fall apart. Polyester, silk and nylon are all fairly durable and can be washed in a machine but it’s generally better to line-dry them as well. However, silk, like acetate, is sensitive to the sun.
For those who like the appeal of satin but don’t have the time or patience to deal with the cleaning methods, satin comforters are an excellent compromise. While they do require dry cleaning, you typically don’t have to send them out as often as you would a set of sheets.
